Christmas Present

Christmas may be a time of fantasy and wonder for children and they do bring a rush of joy and laughter to any Christmas morning. But as an adult I have found that Christmas means more than the shopping, presents and gift wrapping. Each year it gives me pause to look back over the course of life with a reference point to one single day that happens every year without fail and is always celebrated in some fashion. In those memories I find not the gifts that were given but the peoplw whom I spend those holidays with, the smiles and laughter still ring in my mind.
A true Christmas present is the memories that are created in those precious few hours we spend with family and friends. Sometimes it was just a matter of a phone call, a card or a brief visit but the "present" was the time spent. I can recall Holidays from the past that were more festively decorated or tables filled with treats and goodies but the Holiday treats I look foward to most are the few hours each year that we gather and enjoy one anothers company. Our Cousin hosts a family Holiday party every year, everyone is welcome and they all bring a dish to pass, nothing formal but family getting together to celebrate life and the holidays. Of all the family functions that "require" our attendance this one I look forward to the most. It is always warm and inviting and we get the chance to mingle and visit with relatives we would not see otherwise. The memories of the holidays both past and present are the true Gift that I cherish each and every year. For it is a day where smiles abound, differences are set aside and enemies share a cup of warm cocoa. Too bad every day could not be like Christmas but then if it were Christmas would not be so special.
