Dealing with Dying
By S.e. Simmons of Fortress Nutrition
A few months ago there was a diagnosis of Cancer after surgery to remove my mother's Gall Bladder. Originally it was to be liproscoopic surgery but was switched to traditional surgery after final testing. We were told the mass tested positive for cancer an aggressive one and on subsequent visits found out that it had not all been removed and because of where it waas located and her age no surgery was going to take place. After convincing her that Chemo and radiation would extend her life she agreed and began this process. After 2 months ( actually 3 weeks on and one week off per month) they re-tested her, the test itself drained her and left her weak and depressed but the results were that the chemo was not working, in fact the cancer was spreading. Of course now they want to try another type of chemo on her and they can no longer do radiation because of how it has spread. And the co-pay on new pills is going to cost $90 or they can inplant a device that dispurses chemo contantly for 48 hrs at a time or just give her pain medications. So now we are faced with the facts that this will likely be her last holiday season. You can see the decline in her face and movements, she tries to hold in the dispair and fear but I can see it in her eyes. My father is beside himself not knowing how to care for this woman who has shared his life for over 50 years. These days marriages are so disposable that most people can not comprehend spending that much time with one person. I on the other hand admire them for all they have been through together and even now when they face the ultimate emotional situation, there is tenderness and love in their actions. Mom is determined to make this a great holiday for us all and Dad is determined to make it one for her. Cancer may have invaded our family but it has also pulled us all together and made our commitment to life stronger.
